About the TRAILBLAZERS Book Series
TRAILBLAZERS, BLACK WOMEN WHO HELPED MAKE AMERICA GREAT, AMERICAN FIRSTS/AMERICAN ICONS, is a six-volume biographical look at the lives and careers of over 400 brilliant women from the eighteenth century to the present who blazed uncharted paths in every conceivable way. Written by Gabrielle David, TRAILBLAZERS will be released over the course of 2021, 2025 and 2026.
Each TRAILBLAZERS volume is organized into three to four sections. Besides providing biographical information written in a warm and welcoming tone, replete with powerful photographs, David provides a historical timeline for each section written from Black women’s viewpoint that maps out the significance of the featured women that follow. David, who sees herself as a storyteller, has compiled through painstaking research, an affordable and accessible historical reference book that shares stories about Black women from key points in American history. From slavery and the abolitionist and suffragist movements to the civil rights and feminist movements, to today’s Black Lives Matter, Me Too, and Say Her Name movements, these women changed the world with their activism and leadership, and their art, teaching, writing, and music.
TRAILBLAZERS’ overall objective is to savor the triumphs of the human spirit by honoring the Black women who blazed a trail and paved the way for the women who dared to pick up the torch to follow. What binds these women together is that they shook-up the status quo, broke barriers, and set standards as they struggled on the front lines. Unfortunately, the issue of erasure—the phenomenon of rendering marginalized groups practically invisible due to lack of recognition and discrepancies in who has the power to document history—often obscures many Black stories. Many Black women are the unsung, the forgotten, and the erased trailblazers of artists, activists, politicians, businesswomen, scientists, and educators.
From the foremothers who blazed trails and broke barriers, to today’s women warriors, TRAILBLAZERS features powerful and inspiring role models for women and girls from all cultural backgrounds who are poised to become super women of the future, as well as those people who are intellectually curious and want to learn more. TRAILBLAZERS is a clarion call for recognition of the transformative work black women have done and continue to do. For this reason, TRAILBLAZERS belongs on the bookshelf of every home, school, and library in America.
